Bike to Work Scheme

The Bike to Work Scheme, also known as the Cycle to Work Scheme, is a tax incentive initiative designed to encourage employees like you to cycle to work. Under this scheme, your employer can cover the cost of a new bicycle, including accessories, and you can repay the amount through regular instalments deducted from your gross salary. The best part is that you are not liable for tax, PRSI, or the Universal Social Charge on these repayments.

How to Buy a Bike on the Scheme:

• Visit our store, and our knowledgeable team will guide you through the options to help you choose the perfect electric bike that suits your needs.
• Once you’ve made your decision, we’ll provide you with an invoice for the electric bike and any accessories you wish to purchase.
• Present the invoice to your employer.
• After we have received payment, you can collect your brand new electric bike.
• Over an agreed period, your employer will deduct the cost from your gross wage.

Saving Money with the Bike to Work Scheme:

As an employee participating in the Bike to Work Scheme, you can save significantly on the costs of cycling to work. Your repayments are deducted from your salary before tax, USC, and PRSI are applied. This means that even someone on the highest tax rate can save almost half the cost of a new bike and equipment.

Scheme Rules:

The scheme applies to bikes and equipment up to the value of €1,250. For pedelecs or e-bikes and related safety equipment, the limit is €1,500.

You can utilize the scheme once every 4 years, based on tax years. For example, if you purchased a bike in 2023, you can avail the next tax relief in January 2027.

The scheme covers various items, including new bikes and pedelecs, helmets, lights, locks, reflective clothing, and more. Please note that motorbikes, mopeds, scooters, second-hand bicycles, and associated equipment are not covered.

Buying a Bike under the Bike to Work Scheme:

To take advantage of the scheme, check with your employer if they participate and familiarize yourself with their requirements. Typically, you can select your bike and equipment from any shop, or your employer may have specific shop restrictions. Civil or public servants may need to choose a shop from the suppliers list. Once you have chosen your bike and equipment, inform your employer of your selection. They will pay the bike shop or supplier directly. It’s important to note that your employer cannot reimburse you if you make the payment.

Additionally, you will need to sign a written agreement confirming that the bike is for your personal use and will be used for qualifying journeys, specifically commuting to and from work.

If your employer provides you with a bike at no cost, it is acceptable under the scheme. As long as the combined cost of the bike and equipment does not exceed €1,250 or €1,500 for an e-bike, you will not be taxed for this benefit in kind.
